Directional Sign in Montreal
When we think about signage projects, we often picture work sites under the summer sun. However, at Signalisation Kalitec, we know that signage projects often extend late into fall—and even into winter. The need for signage is constant, and it is absolutely possible to carry out installations during the cold season. Here’s why and how we make it happen.
Why Install in Winter?
Installing signage projects is the final link in a chain of steps that can sometimes stretch out: planning and design, manufacturing, and then installation. In addition, some municipalities and organizations take advantage of the winter period to prepare their networks before the busy spring season.
Winter Challenges
Installing signs or structures in winter comes with challenges: low temperatures, frozen ground, and unpredictable weather conditions. These factors require careful planning and specialized equipment. At Kalitec, we’ve developed methods and tools that allow us to navigate these constraints effectively.
Constraints
- Low Temperatures: Our teams use equipment designed to operate in extreme cold conditions. This allows us to work year-round—though a little hot chocolate helps on the coldest days!
- Snow: Fresh snow can easily be moved to access the installation site. However, heavy accumulation can hinder access and make it harder to locate the chosen site.
- Frozen Ground: Frozen soil is undoubtedly the main constraint when installation requires driving piles. While our powerful hammers can easily break through surface frost, deep frost is like trying to drive into solid rock (not ideal!).
Installation Periods
Installations on pounded anchors: Our teams can usually install until early January without major issues. An unusually cold fall can move this date forward, while early snowfall can push it back. Interestingly, snow acts as an insulator for the ground, delaying deep frost.

Installations on Existing Supports: For installations on existing supports (e.g., light poles, existing posts, or concrete bases), work can be done throughout the winter as long as the site is accessible.

Benefits for our clients
By choosing to install your projects in winter, you gain several advantages:
- Budget Optimization: Since winter is our low season, you avoid potential surcharges for urgent deliveries.
